Jean-Guihen Queyras

Cello

Jean-Guihen Queyras (Montreal, 1967) is this year’s Artist in Residence at the Cello Biennale Amsterdam. He was involved with the Biennale since its conception and has given many memorable performances there. Queyras is known for his diverse repertoire. He interprets the cello concertos by Haydn and Vivaldi, but also plays music by Dallapiccola, Kurtag, Ligeti, Webern, Boulez, and Gilbert Amy. He is a member of various chamber music ensembles, including a piano trio with Isabelle Faust and Alexander Melnikov, and an ensemble in which he performs together with the zarb specialists Kevan and Bijan Chemirani and the kemençe player Sokratis Sinopoulos. At the Biennales of 2016 and 2018, he was the soloist Joel Bons’ Nomaden, composed specifically for Queyras and the Atlas Ensemble. Queyras is teacher at the Musikhochschule in Freiburg and artistic director the festival Rencontres Musicales de Haute-Provence. He plays a cello made by Gioffredo Cappa in 1696, made available by the Mécénat Musical Société Générale.
