Andrea Leine & Harijono Roebana Choreography, musical dramaturgy

Cello Octet Amsterdam and LeineRoebana’s choreographers will be joining forces to integrate dance, space and movement to modify and amplify an audience’s listening experience. You’ll explore and discover how music connects to the space in which it’s performed and expresses itself through the human body.

The production is inspired by music that spanned the transition from the Renaissance to the Baroque eras. For example, compositions by Gesualdo in which he intertwined traditional polyphony with emerging early-Baroque expression, and Luzzaschi’s and Strozzi’s works which provided a repertoire for female vocals at a time when women were first allowed to become singers. Composer Peter Vigh has built an entirely new soundscape based on this music, juxtaposing centuries-old music and contemporary sounds, instruments and bodies, while creating space for the unexpected.

Sonus Motus has been co-produced by LeineRoebana and Cello Octet Amsterdam in partnership with Cello Biennale Amsterdam.
