Martijn Padding’s new cello concerto (composed for Matt Haimovitz) was scheduled to premiere in 2020 but, as with so many other things, was postponed at the last moment. Orchestra and soloist alike can’t wait to premiere this piece at this year’s Cello Biennale.

Jean-Guihen Queyras has been itching to perform Béla Bartók’s Viola Concerto on cello for a long time now. In fact, this was the theme of our 2020 Cello Biennale – The Cello Takes Over. This year, he’ll finally be able to fulfil his dream.

And last but by no means least, we’ll be hearing three pieces by Grażyna Bacewicz, Poland’s leading 20th-century female composer – Quartet for 4 cellos, and Concertos No. 1 & 2 for Cello and Orchestra.
