Mischa Maisky
Cello
Mischa Maisky (Riga, 1948) is one of the most striking cellists of today. He started his cello education at the Conservatory in Leningrad and continued his studies with Mstislav Rostropovich in Moscow. In 1971, he emigrated to Israel. He also briefly studied intensively with another Russian cello legend, Gregor Piatigorsky, in Los Angeles. Mischa Maisky is currently living in Belgium. Throughout his many stage performances and numerous vinyl and CD recordings, he frequently worked with musicians such as pianists Martha Argerich, Radu Lupu, and Sergio Tiempo, violinists Gidon Kremer and Janine Jansen, and conductors Leonard Bernstein, Zubin Meta, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Daniel Barenboim, and Giuseppe Sinopoli. For the past few years, he has regularly been accompanied on the piano by his daughter Lily Maisky. At the Biënnales in 2014 and 2018, his performances included Richard Strauss’ Don Quixote and Britten’s cello sonata with his daughter Lily Maisky.
