The Residentie Orchestra is a fixed value at the Cello Biënnale Amsterdam. They often bring Dutch premieres or world premieres, but this time it’s a highly classical programme of indestructible classics. Haydn’s two cello concertos belong to the pinnacle of the classical era. The young cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason, who became world famous when he performed at Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding at Windsor Castle, takes on Cello Concerto No. 2.
Ivan Karizna and Liza Ferschtman perform Brahms’ Double Concerto, also referred to as ‘the most beautiful cello concerto’. Johannes Brahms composed his double concerto for violin, cello, and orchestra as a peace offering for his best friend Joseph Joachim, the world-famous violinist with whom he had fallen out a while before.
