Residentie Orkest

Orchestra

Het Residentie Orkest was founded in 1904 by composer and conductor Henri Viotta in The Hague. The orchestra soon made a name for itself: in 1911, Richard Strauss conducted his own work with the orchestra, and it went on to perform with composers such as Stravinsky, Ravel, and Hindemith.

From 1949 to 1973, Willem van Otterloo was chief conductor; under his leadership, the orchestra gained international recognition through LP recordings for Philips. His successors included Jean Martinon, Ferdinand Leitner, Hans Vonk, Jevgeni Svetlanov, Jaap van Zweden, and Neeme Järvi. Later, Jan Willem de Vriend, Nicholas Collon, and Anja Bihlmaier conducted the orchestra. Since the 2025-2026 season, Jun Märkl has been chief conductor. Richard Egarr is principal guest conductor until 2029, and since 2024, Chloe Rooke has been emerging artist in residence.

The orchestra is the resident ensemble of the Amare cultural complex in The Hague and collaborates with partners such as Het Nationale Theater, Dutch National Opera, and the Royal Conservatoire.
