Jonathan Bloxham
Conductor
Jonathan Bloxham is the musical director and chief conductor of the Luzerner Theater and the Luzerner Sinfonieorchester. He has received praise for performances of Peter Grimes, La bohème, Idomeneo, Luisa Miller, L'elisir d'amore, and Hänsel und Gretel. He is the chief conductor of the Nordwestdeutsche Philharmonie, succeeding Andris Nelsons and Jonathon Heyward. With the London Mozart Players, he opened a London season at St Martin-in-the-Fields, and commissioned works from composers such as Anna Clyne.
In 2026/27, he returns to the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchester, Antwerp Symphony Orchestra, and the Residentie Orkest, and makes debuts with the Zurich Chamber Orchestra, Real Filharmonía de Galicia, and Bruckner Orchester Linz. Recent guest engagements include London Philharmonic, Tokyo Symphony, Mozarteumorchester Salzburg, and Tonkünstler-Orchester. In September 2026, he made his debut with the Opernhaus Zürich, conducting Die Fledermaus.
In 2024 three CDs were released, including Bach’s keyboard concertos with the Academy of St Martin in the Fields. His conducting career began in 2016 with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra; before that, he was a cellist. He has led the Northern Chords Festival since 2009.
