Ivan Karizna, surrounded by a family of musicians, started playing the cello aged 7. He received lessons from the well-known cello pedagogue Valentin Perlin. When he was 17 years old, he moved to Paris to study with Jérôme Pernoo, and went on to study at the Kronberg Academy with Frans Helmerson.
Ivan is a laureate of numerous international cello competitions, including the 2017 Queen Elisabeth Competition, where he won the fifth prize as well as the Audience Prize.
He previously appeared at the Cello Biënnale in 2018 with music from Belarus. In 2022, he brought the arrangement of Shostakovich’s viola sonata with Amsterdam Sinfonietta. In 2024, he made a deep impression with his interpretation of Shostakovich’s first cello concerto with the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra.
Ivan has performed as a soloist with nearly every Dutch orchestra and successfully completed a major tour of Australia this year.
