In the context of Everything by Beethoven, his Sonata for Horn and Piano – which Beethoven himself arranged for cello and piano – can’t be missed. Schumann’s Märchenbilder was originally composed for viola and piano. The famous 19th Century cellist Robert Hausmann, who premiered Brahms’ Sonata No. 2 and his Double Concerto, arranged the piece for cello and piano.

The Czech composer Bohuslav Martinů wrote several duos for two string instruments. The second movement of the duo for violin and cello, which includes a substantial cadenza for the cello, is a demanding chamber piece for the contestants, who are additionally allowed to choose one out of three shorter highlights of the 20th Century solo cello repertoire.

The jury of the National Cello Competition 2026 consists of: Sven Arne Tepl (chair), Chu Yi-Bing, Jan Ype Nota, Giovanni Gnocchi, Monika Leskovar, Emmanuelle Bertrand, Liza Ferschtman en Patty Hamel (secretary).
