Having previously performed at the Cello Biënnale, the Indonesian cellist and composer Alfian Emir Adytia returns to the festival with a three-piece band to perform the concert version of his album Decolmuseum (Decolonisation Museum). The album tells the story of his ancestors, who fought for Indonesia’s independence, and symbolises his own ‘decolonisation’: breaking free from the shackles of trying to fit into one single musical genre.

The traditional sounds of Indonesian folk music are juxtaposed with progressive rock and metal. This interdisciplinary performance – which includes images and archival video material from pre-independence Indonesia – is more than just an impressive musical performance: it’s a homage to human resilience.
