Rembrandt Frerichs
Piano, composer
Rembrandt Frerichs (1977) is a Dutch jazz pianist and composer. As a student he was given the Scholarship for Excelling Young Musicians to study in New York City. He graduated cum laude from the Conservatoire of the Hague, and made his debut at the North Sea Jazz Festival at the young age of 22. He worked with, among others, saxophone player Michael Brecker, who said about him: "This guy sounds great". Rembrandt plays in various ensembles of his own formation, such as the Rembrandt Frerichs Trio and Levantasy. In his playing he uses influences from the American jazz tradition as well as Arabian musical styles and philosophy. His interest in the sound of early music and Eastern instruments such as the santoor and the Qanun led him to start using the fortepiano. He brings together elements of Baroque music and Eastern music in his improvisations with masters of Persian music Kayhan Kalhor and Hossein Alizadeh.
