Global Gongs Collective
Ensemble
Global Gongs Collective, founded in 2020, is formed of amateur as well as professional gamelan players. It grew out of Ensemble Multifoon, which was founded in 1995 by Sinta Wullur. Their repertoire is centered around minimal music, inspired by non-Western music.
Global Gongs is the name of the only twelve-tone Gamelan in The Netherlands. Developed by Sinta Wullur in 1995, the Global Gongs gamelan is tuned chromatically, like a piano, while the melodies are modal and playing style stays close to the Javanese tradition. The resonance of the gongs in particular has a meditative effect, which creates space for calm and reflection. Set against this are the rhythms on the brass percussion instruments, which by contrast are rousing and forge a connection to primal Earthly forces. The instruments are arranged as a theatrical installation, creating space for rituals and gatherings.
