The German cellist Friedemann ‘Fried’ Dähn is a representative of the old-school avant-garde movement. A true pioneer and one of the first to expand his cello playing with live electronics and a loop station.

In 1988, he completed his studies with Johannes Goritzki at the conservatoire in Düsseldorf cum laude. He took masterclasses with Boris Pergamenschikow, Heinrich Schiff, Michael Flaksman, and Mischa Maisky.

Between 1988 and 1991, he was the cellist of Ensemble Modern in Frankfurt, where he had the opportunity to work with, among others, K.-H. Stockhausen, Ornette Coleman, and Frank Zappa. At the same time, he developed an electric cello and started his own musical projects around improvisation, electronic music, and jazz, as well as projects where various art forms, like sound and language or music and image, were combined.
