Johannes Brahms was particularly enamoured with his own Sonata for Violin and Piano No. 1 in G Major, Op. 78. Shortly before his death, he decided to rewrite this piece for cello and piano – something he took extremely seriously. Besides changing its key to D major, he made over two hundred changes to the piano part alone.

César Franck’s Sonata in A Major for Violin and Piano was a wedding gift to the famous violinist Eugène Ysaÿe. Jules Delsart subsequently rearranged the piece for cello and piano, with Franck’s blessing, and in turn the young French soloist Edgar Moreau created yet another version himself.
