Phion Symphony Orchestra

Ensemble

Orkest Phion, the orchestra of Gelderland & Overijssel (formed from the merger of Het Gelders Orkest and the Orkest van het Oosten) aims to be meaningful to as many people as possible through symphonic music. Under chief conductor Alexei Ogrintchouk and led by concertmasters Mathieu van Bellen and Bas Treub, it offers a wide variety of musical programmes, designed to inspire and surprise. In doing so, it not only affirms existing traditions, but it also pushed boundaries and breaks ceilings. The orchestra introduces new themes and enters into collaborations both within and beyong its own field.

In 2022, Orkest Phion made its first appearance at the Cello Biënnale with Anastasia Kobekina and Kian Soltani performing Dmitri Kabalevsky’s two cello concertos, and in 2024 the orchestra returned with cello concertos by Schumann (Alexander Warenberg) and Fazıl Say (Maximilian Hornung).
