In 2005, Marie-Elisabeth Hecker was one of the youngest cellists ever to win the Mstislav Rostropovich International Cello Competition in Paris. She has since been one of the most demanded cello soloists of today. She has performed with orchestras such as the BBC Symphony Orchestra, the Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia, Dresden Philharmonic, Filarmonica della Scala, the Gewandhausorchester, Orchestre National de France, Staatskapelle Berlin, Antwerp Symphony Orchestra, and Vienna Philharmonic. Hecker also performs across the globe in chamber music recitals, especially together with her husband, pianist Martin Helmchen, with whom she has also recorded several albums.

Hecker was born in Zwickau, Robert Schumann’s place of birth. She started playing the cello when she was five years old, at the Robert Schumann Conservatory, after which she started studying with the renowned German cellist Peter Bruns. She continued her studies with Heinrich Schiff and took masterclasses with cellists such as Anner Bylsma, Bernard Greenhouse, Frans Helmerson, Gary Hoffman, and Steven Isserlis.

Since August 2017, she has been teaching at the Hochschule für Musik Dresden. She also supports a music school in Rwanda, in collaboration with Music Road Rwanda, where she regularly organises music projects.
