Haydn Jeugd Strijkorkest

Ensemble

The Haydn Jeugd Strijkorkest (HJSO) is a youth string orchestra in the northern Netherlands with the ambition of achieving a high musical standard. The orchestra is conducted by Jan Ype Nota.

The HJSO offers young talent ensemble training and, where possible, guides its members toward the level required for professional musical education. The orchestra was founded in 1989. Its name derives from the special significance of Joseph Haydn for music in general and for the string quartet in particular.

The orchestra’s members come from the northern Netherlands. The orchestra rehearses in Groningen. Many of its members have been accepted to the Young Talent department of the Prins Claus Conservatoire in Groningen. Around 20 to 25 concerts are put on per season, partly in The Netherlands and partly abroad, during their annual concert tour in the summer. The orchestra gives the young musicians the opportunity to familiarise themselves with all facets of the repertoire, by programming Baroque, contemporary, and cross-over pieces alongside traditional classical and romantic music. In the past, the orchestra has featured solo performances by young musicians who were then still unknown, such as the violinists Janine Jansen, Sonja van Beek, Simone Lamsma, Nadia Wijzenbeek, Lisa Jacobs, and many others.
