Giovanni Sollima studied cello with Giovanni Perriera and Antonio Janigro and composition with his father and Milko Kelemen. He is a true cello virtuoso and an exceptional composer. He communicates through music bursting with Mediterranean rhythms, full of typically Italian melodies, and he covers every stylistic period, from the ‘Jurassic of the Cello’ – as he calls the Baroque era – all the way to metal. He is also a qualified researcher of the old Italian cello school. For instance, during the 2018 Biënnale he presented a programme of music by Giovanni Battista Costanzi, and in 2022 he played the rediscovered Cello Concerto in G by Gaetano Ciandelli with the Orchestra of the 18th Century.
Giovanni Sollima’s compositions are beloved among many cellists. He is considered a role model and heavily contributes to the creation of new repertoire for the cello. His audience is remarkably diverse and ranges from classical music enthusiasts to young metalheads. During the 2018 Biënnale, Giovanni Sollima received the Anner Bijlsma Award.
