Doris Hochscheid studied with Dmitry Ferschtman in Amsterdam, Melissa Phelps in London, and Philippe Muller in Paris. Twice she was awarded the ‘Prize for an outstanding cellist’ at the Tanglewood Festival in the United States. She performed as a soloist in Ligeti’s Cello Concerto and in the world premieres of cello concertos by Dimitri Andrikopoulos, Martijn Padding, and Chiel Meijering with Asko|Schönberg, of which she was a member from 1997 to 2017. For many years she was also a member of the Leo Smit Ensemble, with which she, in addition to the regular concerts in Amsterdam, also performed in Paris and London.
In 2007, together with Frans van Ruth, Doris Hochscheid founded the Stichting Cellosonate Nederland (now called Waagstuk), in order to house their activities in the field of Dutch music.
In 2018, she received a grant from the Amsterdams Fonds voor de Kunsten to develop her work in the field of music theatre. This led to the chamber opera We’ll never let you down, about the famous cellist Jacqueline du Pré, produced in co-production with the Cello Biënnale.
Doris Hochscheid is also a teacher of Alexander Technique. She taught this at the Conservatory of Amsterdam from 2004 to 2021.
