Brahms’ second sonata and Strauss’ sonata were both composed in the 80s of the 19th Century. Brahms’ second sonata is passionate and compelling from start to end. Strauss’ sonata has a characteristic heroic beginning without the music becoming as bombastic as some of his large symphonic works. The programme ends on a light note with the Serenade by cellist-composer Alfredo Piatti.
