Composers Frédéric Chopin and Mieczysław Weinberg were both born in Poland. Chopin left Poland of his own accord to immerse himself in all that the Parisian art world had to offer. Jewish-born Weinberg, however, fled Nazi persecution in Poland only to face continued persecution in the Soviet Union.
We principally associate Chopin with works for piano, yet he also had a soft spot for the cello. To mark its tenth anniversary, the Polish Cello Quartet will be performing a selection of mazurkas, études, waltzes and preludes for piano rearranged for cello.
Weinberg’s works are less well known than Chopin’s but have been receiving greater acclaim in more recent times. His four sonatas for solo cello are a penetrating glimpse into his tormented life.
