Vampyr is based on In a Glass Darkly, a collection of stories written in 1872 by J. Sheridan Le Fanu. Dreyer draws on two of those stories for Vampyr; one is 'Carmilla', a lesbian vampire story, and the other is 'The Room in the Dragon Volant' about a living funeral. Julian West plays the role of Allan Gray, a student of the occult who arrives in the village of Courtempierre, which has fallen under the curse of a vampire.

Vampyr is accompanied live with new music by and from Metrocelli: Joel Siepmann, Yasha Albracht, Annie Tångberg, Emile Visser and the bandoneon player Martin de Ruiter.
