Up to now, the most renowned music competition in the world included three categories: violin, piano and singing. Now, a fourth category has been added: cello. The Queen Elisabeth Competition 2017 (May 8 – June 3) is a cello competition for the first time, and will be every four years from now on. Many of the jury members (15 in total) are old friends of the Cello Biënnale, like Roel Dieltiens, David Geringas, Natalia Gutman, Frans Helmerson, Gary Hoffman, Anssi Karttunen, Mischa Maisky, Antonio Meneses, Truls Mørk, Jian Wang and Pieter Wispelwey. But some of the competitors have also appeared at the Cello Biënnale, like Anastasia Kobekina, Aurélien Pascal en Bruno Philippe.
The Cello Biënnale has arranged with the Queen Elisabeth Competition that the first prize winner will play with the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra at the cello Biënnale 2018.
