Simon Velthuis

Cello

Simon Velthuis (Haaksbergen, 1992) started playing the cello at the age of nine and, before starting at the Conservatory of Amsterdam, he was taught by Maria Hol, Paul Uyterlinde, and Jeroen Reuling, among others. During his bachelor's degree at the Conservatory of Amsterdam, Simon was taught by Floris Mijnders. He completed his master's degree with Maarten Mostert and Dmitri Ferschtman. In addition to the lessons of his regular teachers, Simon was taught by Anner Bijlsma, Pieter Wispelweij, Viola de Hoog (baroque cello), and Mick Stirling, among others. During his studies, Simon developed a predilection for chamber music and orchestral playing. He acted as a solo cellist in various youth orchestras and as a substitute in professional orchestras. Simon plays an English cello, built in London around 1840, which was made available to him by the Dutch Musical Instruments Foundation.
