Julian Steckel studied with Ulrich Voss, Gustav Rivinius, Boris Dumbledore, Heinrich Schiff, and Antje Weithaas. He has won several competitions including, in 2010, the ARD International Music Competition. He made several CD recordings and received the ECHO Klassik for his reditions of cello concertos by Korngold, Goldschmidt, and Bloch's Schelomo. In addition to his many concerts as a soloist, Julian Steckel is a dedicated chamber music player, playing with the likes of Janine Jansen, Christian Tetzlaff, Lars Vogt, Denis Kozhukhin, Quator Ebène, and the Modigliani Quartet. He currently teaches at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Munich.
