The recording that Sol Gabetta made of Martinů’s Cello Concerto No. 1 in 2016 with the Berlin Philharmonic was a resounding success. In this piece, Martinů succeeded in making the most of the cello’s versatility, as he did with his other solo works for cello and orchestra and his cello sonatas. The same applies to Sol Gabetta, of course!
Cellisimo is a cello festival in the vein of the Cello Biennale Amsterdam that has been organized in Galway to add a little lustre to Galway being the 2020 European Capital of Culture. Both festivals, therefore, wanted to jointly commission an Irish composer to write a new cello concerto. And who else but the foremost, living Irish composer of our time, Gerald Barry. The festival in Galway was unfortunately cancelled. Therefore the world premiere will be in Amsterdam.
