A huge zooming orchestra where 160 children and teenagers play together, the Hello Cello Orchestra learns new music specially written for them to perform at the Cello Biennale. In 2018, jazz violinist and composer Tim Kliphuis wrote the piece for the Hello Cello Orchestra, with cellist Sietse-Jan Weijenberg (principal cellist for the Netherlands Chamber Orchestra) as soloist.
In 2018, the Hello Cello Orchestra is strengthened by young players from Bosnia-Herzegovina, from a camp on the West Bank, and from a refugee camp in Greece. Composer Tim Kliphuis draws inspiration for his new piece from the musical backgrounds of the young cellists from abroad who will be playing his music. They are sent Tim’s music six months before the project begins. With the support and coordination of Superar (Vienna), Musicians without Borders, and El Sistema Greece, they are able to learn the music and to come to the Netherlands for the rehearsals and performance of the Hello Cello Orchestra. The young cellists are hosted at the Cello Biennale for several days.
