Four cellists, four nationalities, four individual quests. With the prize money of the Anner Bijlsma Award, cello phenomenon Giovanni Sollima launched a development trajectory for four young international cellists who want to reach beyond simply excelling in the performance of standard repertoire. At this concert, the spotlights will be aimed at Maya Fridman (Russia) and Chiara Trentin (Italy). Also involved in the concert are Ayşe Deniz Birdal (Turkey) and Abel Selaocoe (South Africa).
Maya Fridman’s free improvisations for cello and voice often come to her after she sees paintings or illustrations that move her. Specially for this project, she wrote these improvisations down for the very first time. For Chiara Trentin (Italy), inspiration comes from an entirely different place: dance and techno. It’s hardly possible to tell, but all sounds in her tracks – even the smallest details – are made by her on the cello, and they are the result of hours upon hours of experimentation.
