Four cellists, four nationalities, four individual quests. With the prize money of the Anner Bijlsma Award, cello phenomenon Giovanni Sollima launched a development trajectory for four young international cellists who want to reach beyond simply excelling in the performance of standard repertoire. At this concert, the spotlights will be aimed at Ayşe Deniz Birdal (Turkey) and Abel Selaocoe (South Africa). Also involved in the concert are Maya Fridman (Russia) and Chiara Trentin (Italy).
Both Ayşe Deniz Birdal (Turkey) and Abel Selaocoe (South Africa) are strongly influenced by the musical traditions of their country of origin, but they both also experiment in finding new ways to use their instruments for the creation of new worlds of sound. Turkish folk music, captivating South African traditional, rock, avant-garde, sacred music – we’ll see it all!
