The notable Belgian composer Wim Henderickx has created a new concerto for Jean-Guihen Queyras, a beloved returning master cellist at the Biennale. For the performance of Australian composer Brett Dean’s new cello concerto, Amsterdam is up now as co-commissioner of the piece, after Sydney and Berlin.
In 2017, Brett Dean made a huge impression with a new string quintet, with Alban Gerhardt as cellist. This year, Gerhard will be the soloist in his new cello concerto. Mathilde Wantenaar from Amsterdam is a representative for the youngest generation of composers. She studied with Wim Henderickx and is truly a jack of all trades. On top of being a composer, she studies singing, piano, and cello.
