Plenty of symbolism and sentiment in three very different soundscapes for cello and strings. Two Iranian grandmasters will be joining forces with their performance of jazz pianist Rembrandt Frerichs’ new double concerto – Kayhan Kalhor on kamancheh and Austrian-born Kian Soltani on cello.
The Georgian composer Vazha Azarashvili composed his cello concerto in 1970. In 2002, the then-25-year-old Maximilian Hornung performed this piece for him, and ever since, it’s been one of his closest and dearest works. Hornung will also be playing James MacMillan’s short, yet profound Kiss on Wood, originally for violin and piano, rearranged by the composer himself for cello and strings.
