Maya Fridman (Moscow, 1989) studied with Dmitri Ferschtman at the Conservatory of Amsterdam, where she received her Master’s degree with the highest distinction. She is a versatile cellist who prefers not to stick to a particular genre. Although she has a background in classical music, she is an equally accomplished performer of folk, rock, jazz, and new music.
Over the last seven years, Maya has been performing regularly in the Netherlands and Germany. She was awarded the Best Musician of 2013 Prize at De Grote Prijs Van Nederland, and has set up many successful projects, including a collaboration with pianist Tomoko Mukaiyama. She regularly releases new albums, the latest called Silent City, which she produced with violinist Merel Vercammen during the Corona pandemic. In the Cello Biënnale 2016, Maya was the main performer and co-creator of the musical theatre show The Master and Margarita. Maya was the musician in residence with Gaudeamus, and the winner of the Dutch Classical Talent Award 2019. She is currently following a development trajectory founded by Giovanni Sollima with the prize money from the Anner Bijlsma Award, for cellists who want to go beyond excelling in the performance of standard repertoire.
